Community Information and Referral
What is an Information and Referral Centre? Information and Referral (I&R)
is a nationally recognized system of delivering accurate information on
community services designed to meet specific needs. This service enables
people to make informed decisions regarding their particular needs, and
select the services most appropriate for their circumstances.
The Human Development Council's Community Information Centre works in collaboration with not-for-profit
groups, community agencies, and government departments. With these partnerships,
we are able to extend the range of our services to include even more individuals
and to provide current and up to date information when making referrals.
The Community Information Centre works with local social service agencies by linking
appropriate services to individuals needing assistance, and, by using
our resources in combination with community groups to heighten awareness
of social issues.
Information and referral centers offer assistance to anyone asking the
question, "I wonder if you can help me?"
Examples of questions received by information and referral services include:
• A senior citizen wanting home care
support in order to live independently.
• A homeless person seeking a shelter bed, or a place to get
out of the cold and to have a hot meal.
• A family facing eviction and doesn't know where to turn
for help.
• A union counselor who calls on behalf of a colleague as
part of an employee assistance program.
• A parent asking where to get food for her family.
• A young mother worried about how to properly care for her
newborn child.
• A laid-off worker wanting to find out about employment insurance.
• A concerned neighbor trying to help a friend in an abusive
relationship.
The Community Information Centre has information on community services throughout the region.

211
WHAT IS 211?
211 is a highly visible, easy to recall telephone phone number that refers
people to the human services needed. 211 will not replace 911 but may
be used by Emergency Personnel to refer people in non-emergency situations
to the services they need. 211 provides single point of access for human
service information and referral.
WHY 211?
Simplifies access particularly for vulnerable people in our
community and increases the effectiveness of human services by directing
people to the service best suited to meet their needs sooner.
WHERE WILL 211 BE AVAILABLE?
211 has been approved for use across Canada. Currently 211 is available
in parts of the United States and now in Toronto, Calgary, and Edmonton.
What is happening in New Brunswick with 211?
The Human Development Council is coordinating efforts to bring
211 to our region. Please feel free to contact the Human Development Council
for more information, or visit the following websites: 211
Canada, or Inform
Canada.
