A Community
Partner Since 1979 How did we
start? The Human
Development Council is unique to the province of New Brunswick. It grew
from a coordinated effort by the former Social Services Council, United
Way of Greater Saint John, City of Saint John, Province of New Brunswick,
and the federal government who funded a year long study in 1976, called
the Human Development Project. Its purpose was to produce a framework for
the planning and delivery of human services. Community participation was
essential as was a spirit of partnership and collective
responsibility.
Alleviating Poverty Twenty-seven percent
(27%) of citizens in Saint John live in poverty. One in three children and
youth are living in poverty and Saint John has the second highest rate of
single parents living in poverty in Canada (1996 Census Stats).
Partnerships are vital to alleviate poverty. The Council works
collaboratively with community agencies, individuals, government
departments, businesses, churches, and labour to initiate, develop and
implement creative strategies to meet the needs of the community.
The Human Development Council has helped establish many vital
community organizations including: Community Health Centre
